CHARACTER NAME: John Wayne Cleaver
FANDOM: The John Wayne Cleaver books by Dan Wells (I Am Not A Serial Killer, Mr. Monster, I Don't Want To Kill You)
CHRONOLOGY: Post-Mr. Monster
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: John the Brave
ALTER EGO: John Wayne Cleaver; high school student.
BACKGROUND:
John's world is pretty much exactly like ours... except for the part where there are immortal beings alternately known through the ages as gods or demons, who have unique extraordinary abilities and 'feed' in various ways off of human beings. The demon from the first book needed to eat human flesh to either take over whole bodies or regenerate pieces of a chosen body; the demon from the second book could only feel emotions that humans around him were feeling and he thrived on the stronger of them. That said, John was just your average kid (...well, we'll get to the exacts on that soon enough) when he found out about them namely by watching what he THOUGHT was his little old man neighbor turn into a hideous beast and DEVOUR someone before his eyes. It answered the question of who the strange serial killer in town was... and opened up a whole new world of questions.
John knew that no one would believe him, and the one time he tried to call the police about the matter, watched as the police he'd called were killed before his eyes. That was when John decided to take matters into his own hands, use everything that he'd spent years learning and suppressing to take the thing out. And, after some very harrowing moments and a near death experience with his mother right there to see that NO REALLY IT'S A FRICKING DEMON OMG, he did.
...then one of it's friends came by to find out what happened. Pretended to be a federal agent. Started killing people to flush out his friend's killer, namely John, and kidnapped him into a horror house full of captive women. John had to pull some seriously sneaky stuff to pull it off, but he managed to defeat this second demon as well and even save the women in the house.
All except one, which will forever haunt him.
The other part which haunts him is the fact that he had to show his less 'pleasant' side to the one girl he really likes, a neighbor girl by the name of Brook who he'd actually managed to get close to (which is HARD, considering) and it scared her away from wanting to deal with him, pretty much the worst thing that could happen in some ways. He saved her, but that one flash of something else in himput a real wrench in his relationship with her.
John's the main character in the series, and his relationships are kind of... difficult, given his situation. His father left years ago after heavily abusing his mother, himself, and his sister; he lives with his mother and her twin sister and the family runs a mortuary, which is one of his favorite things in the world. His sister has an apartment, but she works as the secretary for the business and their relationship is a little bit strained because he's kind of 'odd' and she's got a very low tolerance for her family in general. ...that said, she DID break up with the boyfriend that conked John over the head for SAVING PEOPLE'S LIVES because he thought the kid was creepy.
He has a friend named Max, mostly because neither of them have any other friends and John figures he needs a friend so that he won't be too much of a loner, but their relationship is very shaky especially after John starts making friends with girls (which Max can't seem to pull off). And, of course, there's Brook, the girl across the street that John is very much attracted to and a little bit obsessed with even if he's extremely awkward with her.
PERSONALITY:
John is a sociopath. John is a sociopath with, quite frankly, all the markers for ending up a violent multiple murderer.
That said, John is aware of this and takes steps to keep his own tendencies in line as he does not want to lose control of his baser instincts and hurt anyone. He has studied the psychology of serial killers extensively not because he admires them or wants to be like them but so that he can understand and take steps against his own psychosis, see where these people (or their lives) went wrong to turn them on that path and avoid their fate.
Privately, John is rather sarcastic and has a dark but very sharp wit. Out loud, he's usually somewhat bland or polite if he doesn't know you, occasionally awkward in an amusing way, and blunt at times since it saves time. Getting to know him takes time and even then, he keeps secrets if only because well... what goes on between his ears can be pretty disturbing. But he does loosen up a little. Balancing necessary alone time with just-as-necessary people time is hard for him.
He can't connect with people easily at all, at least through the traditional means. Friendship, family, love, happiness... the only way he's ever found to connect to people quickly and solidly is through fear, something that he has to admit thrills him when it happens but frustrates him on the whole; he doesn't WANT to be like that. He wants to think of kissing the girl he's interested in, not cutting her up into pieces... he wants nothing more than to be normal but even therapy only did so much for him.
He keeps a list of very firm rules that he keeps to in order to make sure from doing anything that might send him down the wrong path; this includes things like 'if I think about doing something violent to someone, I should smile and give them a compliment instead' or 'If I find myself focusing on one person more than anyone else, I need to avoid them for a week' so he won't get a fixation. He even became a vegetarian since he felt like cutting meat fed into his urges and took up baking to give himself something constructive to do instead of dwelling on unhealthy thoughts. That said, one of his greatest 'joys' is working in the family mortuary, helping his mother and his aunt to prepare the bodies. Dealing with them is easier for him than dealing with most people and he gets a quiet peace out of the work that he finds frustratingly comforting.
By the end of Mr. Monster, John has decided on something, however. He's decided that he's going to use the fact that he's different, that he's 'broken' in a sense, that he's clever and inventive, to try and protect people. He decided to use his fearlessness, his lack of emotional attachment, the unique focus and the way he can THINK like these creatures to hunt them down, stop them from hurting people. To make it clear, though; he doesn't go after humans. He's not Dexter; people are ALWAYS off limits.
Yeah, he can come off as creepy but... that said, he's also a sad, lonely kid with a lot of demons to wrestle with inside and out. Mostly, he's a good person. A damaged person, but a good person with his heart in the right place.
POWER:
John has no canonical abilities (other than being incredibly badass). What I'd like to give him is pyrokinesis, the ability to sense, control, and create fire with an immunity to the same. I'd also like to give him the ability to block pain from registering. Both of these are extensions from canon to some extent; as John has something of a 'love' of fire and is a great deal tougher when dealing with pain than most people seem to be.

[Voice]
I'm looking for a friend.
[A short pause, as if he's trying to figure out what exactly he wants to say; there are a few aborted first syllables before he starts again, his voice clear and calm, even a little dead.]
Specifically, I'm looking to find someone who wants to spend time with me, or at least in the same room for a decent amount of time. Preferably, it would be someone who goes to my new high school; it would probably be better if it was another boy but I've also been friends with girls and it's not really fair to be discriminatory.
I talk a lot sometimes, but only when I'm excited about something and if you tell me to shut up, I can. I don't play video games, but I don't mind them and I'm happy to help you with your school work if you need it.
Contact me here or approach me as needed. My name is John [a slight pause as if leaving something out] Cleaver. Thank you for listening.
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
He had to admit, if only to himself, that it was somewhat sad that the thing he was angriest about was the fact that the phone was with him.
He'd had it in his pocket when he'd been brought to this place, secure and secret and his as he allowed himself to think of very few things. That's where it should have been, except now he was in another world where the phone was effectively useless and no one could use the information stored there towards any good.
He hadn't automatically assumed, of course. Learning about demons had made him assume very little since then. Besides, he had a room after all, and with the room had come a phone. He'd used a pen and paper to copy down all of the names and numbers listed in Foreman's phone, then tried some of the numbers. First, of course, he'd tried nobody, or rather 'Nobody'. There'd been no connection. The rest of them had been a series of messages about nonexistent numbers, a few awkward wrong number conversations, and one conversation that had gone on longer than it had any right to since the older woman was hard of hearing and even harder to convince that he wasn't her son in law checking up on her hip.
After hanging up on her, he made a decision. First, he would make sure to find a charger for the phone; he wasn't sure about the make, but he knew enough to be sure that an extended dead battery could have unfortunate consequences. Second, he would make sure to keep the copies of the numbers in a safe place on him at all times; it wasn't preferable to having the phone functional since he intended to use Foreman's number itself as part of a few of his plans, but it was better than it could be.
He didn't make any other plans, because he'd been told that people at home wouldn't notice that he was gone, that no time would pass. His mother would be fine, his aunt, Brook, his sister. Everyone in town. His daring phonecall wouldn't doom anyone to die, at least not before he was back.
He didn't miss them. He knew he should, but he didn't. What he did miss was his chase, his focus; he'd finally found something to do with himself, he'd set himself on a path and now someone had plucked him right off. He was frustrated, the phone a symbol of his impotent chosen destiny, John the Brave's sword broken.
But they'd given him a new sword. Fire, his oldest and dearest friend, was now his to use or to hold or even just to enjoy burning along the tips of his fingers, harmful to nothing and no one. The joy from that was almost enough to dull his frustration, but not quite enough to cover his somewhat-scattered feelings on his new 'responsibilities'. He was to be paid to assist in securing the peace, help protect people, but he wasn't sure how well that would work when the people he'd be going after could be human. He wasn't sure if he shouldn't just put the whole thing aside and try to exist as he once had, pretending to be normal and doing his part in saving lives by keeping himself from becoming the kind of monster that would butcher people for fun.
His path had been clear, finally clear, and now it was muddied again. That, really, was what made him angry. But worst of all, it made him angry and he didn't know what to do about it.
...he needed a friend. Not someone to confide in, obviously, since his thoughts weren't exactly the kind of thing you wanted people knowing, but someone to take his mind off of everything. Someone to waste time with. He'd have to get on that ASAP, starting with figuring out how you made friends when you hadn't known everyone since you were in preschool.
